MUSIC - building a film's soundtrack, from score to licensed tracks

Overview:

Music is the secret weapon in most film and television productions. A producer needs to work with the director to build a film’s soundtrack – with an original score and/or licensed music and learn the tips and tricks to avoid the pitfalls and common mistakes. A producer needs to navigate music rights with composers, record labels and music publishers, as early as possible.

This Skills Lab will break down music decision-making and the commercial and legal terms of music rights that the producer will need to negotiate.

In this Skills Lab you will learn:

– The fundamentals of music rights (publishing and master rights)
– What rights do I license? Territories, Term, Trailers, In Context/Out of Context, Credits, Re-Record vs Sync
– When does licensing occur? The need to focus on music early in pre-production
– Budgeting for music and treatment of QAPE

Guy Gross is a multi award-winning Australian film and television composer, APRA Ambassador, recipient of the APRA/AGSC International Achievement Award, past President of the Australian Guild of Screen Composers and founding member of the composers’ collective Church Street Studios. From his BAFTA nominated score to the international hit The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, to the hit US Sci-Fi series Farscape, his classical training has resulted in scores covering a huge variety of styles. Over his 35 year career, Guy has composed music for hundreds of hours of television, including dramatic mini series, children’s tv, documentaries, reality tv, commercials, feature films, special events and installations.
